It’s fitting that the themes for our 15th Annual Conference, is Power of Partnerships. The world of responsible forestry and certification is so immense there is not a lot one organization can do on its own. The conference is set to explore the many ways collaboration leads to improved forest management, education & outreach efforts and implementation of the SFI Standard.

If you take a look at our conference agenda you will see we have lined up local and international speakers who will talk about partnerships yielding benefits for the forest products marketplace, communities, First Nations, and government agencies throughout North America and globally. Keynote speaker Linda Coady, Distinguished Fellow, University of British Columbia and Vice-President of Sustainability, Vancouver Olympics Organizing Committee will talk about Certification, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability – The Next Generation. We’ll also be making some exciting announcements.

We will be posting video from conference speakers as well as pictures from the event on our Annual Conference webpage – so check it out if you are not able to join us in Vancouver and take part virtually.

Nadine Block, SFI Senior Director of Government Outreach, talks about a recently published op-ed that advocates for an inclusive LEED rating system.

Last week, The Oregonian published an op-ed written by four leaders in Oregon’s forestry community, including State Forester Marvin Brown, who also serves as board chair for SFI. Other signatories include Clint Bentz, David Ford and Steve Wilson. These experts cite benefits for Oregon’s forests, the economy and green building in the state as reasons for supporting the presence of multiple forest certification programs.

They write, “With a lifetime of first-hand experience and extensive background in the application of forest certification programs in our state, we find it bewildering that the Green Building Council has not opened its LEED policy to all credible forest certification programs … In Oregon, our forests and communities benefit from the improvements resulting from the work of all organizations that certify sustainable forest practices.”

The piece also notes support for an inclusive LEED policy from Oregon Representatives Kurt Schrader, Greg Walden and David Wu, and Governor Ted Kulongoski.

We agree—with most of Oregon’s certified forest lands certified by SFI and programs SFI recognizes, such as ATFS, it’s imperative to open the policy to all credible forest certification programs. That’s a trend across the U.S. and Canada, where more than three quarters of our certified forests meet or are recognized by SFI. It’s also critical that the USGBC recognize wood’s superior environmental benefits and encourage the use of wood products in green building.

Read the piece in full, and check out our green building video if you haven’t already. You can see additional support for an inclusive LEED policy on our petition and website.

I’m excited to report that Oregon State Forester Marvin Brown has been elected SFI Chair. As Oregon State Forester, Brown brings extensive knowledge and background of forest certification and policymaking to the position. He has also worked closely with SFI in the past and has an understanding of the organization’s needs. Brown first became involved with SFI in 1995, as State Forester in Missouri, and was part of the first SFI External Review Panel.

Two other new people have also joined the 18-member board. Chris Wood, President and CEO of Trout Unlimited, has joined the board’s environmental chamber. William V. Street Jr. has joined the social chamber and represents labor. Street is Director of the Woodworkers Department for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

SFI Inc.’s three chamber Board of Directors represents environmental groups social and economic interests equally. Board members include representatives of government (like Marvin) labor (William) environmental (Chris), conservation, professional and academic groups, independent professional loggers, small family forest owners, labor and the forest products companies.

Congratulations to the new members, and we look forward to their continued contributions to the advancement of responsible forestry. You can read the full release and backgrounder on the board changes here.
